Superfund Cleanups and Infant Health.

We are the first to examine the effect of Superfund cleanups on infant health rather than focusing on proximity to a site. We study singleton births to mothers residing within 5km of a Superfund site between 1989-2003 in five large states. Our "difference in differences" approach compares birth outcomes before and after a site clean-up for mothers who live within 2,000 meters of the site and th...

Lead (Pb) in biota and perceptions of Pb exposure at a recently designated Superfund beach site in New Jersey.

The Raritan Bay Slag Site (New Jersey) was designated a Superfund site in 2009 because the seawall, jetties, and sediment contained lead (Pb). Our objective was to compare Pb and mercury (Hg) levels in biota and public perceptions of exposure at the Superfund and reference sites. Samples (algae, invertebrates, fish) were collected from the Raritan Bay Slag Site and reference sites and analyzed ...

Emerging Technology Report: Reclamation of Lead from Superfund Waste Material Using Secondary Lead Smelters

There are over 3,000 sites across the United States contaminated wtth lead. Techniques to remediate these sites include standard stabilization/disposal technologies, reclamation of lead using secondary lead smelters, soil washing, and biological removal technologies. Through a Cooperative Agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Risk Reduction Engineering B secondary Laboratory...

Blood lead, ethnic origin, and lead exposure.

A survey of blood lead concentrations is reported in a group of 199 young Walsall children (3-6 years of age). The geometric mean blood lead concentration was 0.47 mumol/l (range 0.2-1.6 mumol/l). There were no significant differences in blood lead concentrations between groups of children with different ages, sex, ethnic origin, or environment.

Assessment of exposure to lead through air and biological monitoring in a lead and zinc mine

Background and aim: Lead is ubiquitous and one of the earliest metals discovered by the human. This metal is widely used in different industries due to its important physico-chemical properties like softness, high malleability, ductility, low melting point and resistance to corrosion. Lead absorbed in body with several routs and when transfer in blood is primarily in red blood cells. Human exp...
